Assessing Your Medical Lab Tech Career Path


A medical laboratory or medical lab is a specialized lab where tests are performed on medical specimens to gain information regarding a patient’s health to help in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of illness. It differs from a research laboratory where data is obtained through an independent source, whereas a medical lab is specifically designed to perform tests that are either required by law or are requested by the patient for the purpose of obtaining evidence for a court case. A court ordered paternity testing on a person’s welfare or health as part of their investigation into a crime or may order paternity tests to determine if the father is actually the father of a child.

In the United States, there are currently no requirements that allow for Paternity Testing, although many states are working to enact such laws. For example, in Alabama a man must prove that he is the father before a paternity test can be conducted. While many states have similar requirements, it is important for a man to understand all of the specifics of his state’s laws and requirements before running a Paternity Test. Some states, such as Texas, have a “No fault” exception to the requirement for Paternity Testing, which means that if a man can establish that he is not the father of the child, then he will not be required to undergo a DNA test.

Although most medical personnel work directly with patients under the supervision of a physician or other licensed medical personnel, others are employed in laboratories or research facilities and may conduct DNA testing themselves. Some technologists also hold private laboratory certificate, which is an indication that they have received additional training beyond what is required of them by their specific medical facility. These certificates generally last a year or two and must be renewed periodically. Technicians with additional training and certification may be permitted to perform more complex testing that is not covered by their current level of certification. However, certification is only one factor that is considered by some physicians when selecting which medical staff members to hire or supervise.

There are many factors to consider when evaluating the suitability of medical lab techs in a particular medical facility. One of these factors is the type of work environment that the technicians will be operating in. Medical lab technicians that work in a doctor’s office, clinic or hospital setting are typically responsible for managing one or two clinical environments. They often work in close collaboration with the physicians in charge of the specific environment and work closely with them. Technicians who are employed in a dentist’s office or hospital setting are typically responsible for managing a number of different work environments. They may work in the lab doing DNA testing on specimens and working alongside doctors in the field.
